After six long months of editing, long days, long nights, 1 a.m. finishes, backache and even more overwhelm, the paperback version of my memoir, Unashamed: Why do people pay for sex? is finally here!
This whole process has got me thinking about all the behind the scenes work that most people don’t see. What most people do see is the end result. The result of years and years of hard work and overcoming setback after setback. In particular with writing, it is those incredibly long days, late nights and the grittier side that remains unseen. Perhaps some envision a scene out of a Jane Austen novel sitting at an oak desk under a weeping willow tree gazing out over luscious woodland with fluffy bunnies hopping by. The reality is quite the opposite. It certainly was for me anyway. There is a reason why I nicknamed myself ‘sweatpants Sandy’ this past year. Comfort and solitude became my priority when writing.
For anyone reading this who is an aspiring writer or thinking of writing their first book, just know that there will be challenges along the way. Sometimes those challenges will feel like torture for your beautiful creative soul. But just hang on in there and know that the stormy sea will eventually pass, and you will be all the more wiser for it. Make your purpose crystal clear from the very beginning and have a passion for what you are writing about. That will become your fuel for when times are tough, and challenges arise. My deep desire to help others is still a passion that is burning just as brightly now as it was in the beginning of this tumultuous journey.
